E-max is a lithium disilicate ceramic. What separates it from other crown materials is how it handles light: it lets some through rather than stopping it at the surface, which is exactly what natural enamel does. That translucency is why it is the default choice for front teeth, and why an E-max crown next to a natural tooth tends to disappear rather than announce itself.
The same property is its limit. A material that transmits light cannot fully hide what sits behind it, so a very dark tooth base may show through. That is a planning decision, not a defect — and it is why the material is chosen case by case rather than as a house standard.
